A quake that struck south-eastern Taiwan Thursday evening caused widespread damage, including at least three collapses and a massive house-by-house pileup, the country’s meteorological service said.

A death toll rose to at least 46 people in the town of Yueruan in the central mountain town of Hingyang county, where landslides were reported.

An elderly woman, who was walking home, collapsed after a 5.9 magnitude quake at about 20:50 local time, the Taiwan Earthquake Administration said.

The damage had left most of Yueruan in ruins.

On the outskirts of the city, several houses collapsed.

No-one was reported killed but some buildings were « collapsed with little movement » and residents were being evacuated by air.

An official from the Taiwan Earthquake Administration said at least 27 people had been injured as the quake came a day after a 7.8 magnitude quake rocked western China’s Shandong province.

Earlier, a local resident told the AP news agency: « My children fell out of their house, and my wife fell out. We lost our house in Yueruan. »

A rescue agency spokeswoman in the county’s capital, Hsinchu, told the BBC the town would take at least two weeks to clear.

Yueruan has more than 1,000 residential buildings and more than half of them were damaged.
